MPS TO ROCK THE BOAT ON EUROPE AT CAMPAIGN FOR AN INDEPENDENT BRITAIN'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE

In two hard hitting speeches this weekend, MPs from both major parties will be openly critical of the European Union and EMU. Speaking at the Campaign for an Independent Britains annual meeting at the Westminster Central Hall in London on Saturday (2nd May), Austin Mitchell, the Labour MP for Grimsby will be particularly scathing about the Governments policy on the single currency and Laurence Robertson, the Conservative MP for Tewkesbury will call into question Britain's future as part of the European Union.

Austin Mitchell, in a clear break with Government policy, will make clear his view that it is wrong to support monetary union which he sees as a "disaster waiting to happen", on the scale of 1914. Instead of using weapons of mass destruction, "were shouldering the arms of job destruction". He describes EMU as part of the master plan of the "European political elite" to create a political union "at all costs", despite the consequences in "higher unemployment, resurgent fascism and loss of democratic accountability".

Laurence Robertson will be painting a bleak picture of Britains future as a member of the European Union. He believes that Britain should maintain its position as a "global trading nation" and not allow itself to become a "backwater of Europe". It should stand firm against "the tides of Federalism".

NOTE TO EDITORS: The public meeting at which Austin Mitchell and Laurence Robertson will be speaking begins at 2.30pm in the Lecture Hall at Westminster Central Hall.
